چکیده

Hyperthyroidism is a rare side effect of amiodarone treatment. Four patients with this untoward effect are described One patient with mild hyperthyroidism before treatment with amiodarone, developed prolonged severe resistant thyrotoxicosis 6 months after initiation of this drug. A second patient with Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was successfully stabilized with amiodarone for 18 months. However, the arrhythmia recurred and the thyroid function tests were found to be elevated. In 2 other patients only slight elevation of the thyroid function tests were found without clinical manifestations 4 months after treatment with amiodarone had been initiated.

Amiodarone and thyrotoxicosis: case reports.

Amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction has been reported to affect 2-24% of users. Despite the easy management of amiodarone-induced hypothyroidism, the development of thyrotoxicosis leads to a difficult approach in most cases. The aim of this study is to describe three different cases of patients with amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis and discuss the clinical and laboratorial aspects, and the ...

Two cases of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis successfully treated with a short course of antithyroid drugs while amiodarone was continued.

Two patients with amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis were treated successfully with potassium perchlorate and carbimazole while treatment with amiodarone was continued. These antithyroid drugs were stopped after the patients had became clinically and biochemically euthyroid. During follow up, when treatment with amiodarone continued, thyrotoxicosis did not recur. Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosi...

Amiodarone-Induced Thyrotoxic Thyroiditis: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge

Amiodarone is an iodine-based, potent antiarrhythmic drug bearing a structural resemblance to thyroxine (T4). It is known to produce thyroid abnormalities ranging from abnormal thyroid function testing to overt hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. These adverse effects may occur in patients with or without preexisting thyroid disease. Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) is a clinically recogn...

Refractory Amiodarone-induced Thyrotoxicosis: The Surgical Option

Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis is often poorly tolerated owing to underlying cardiac disease, and frequently resistant to medical therapy. We describe a 48-year-old patient with severe cardiac disease who developed amiodarone-associated thyrotoxicosis, refractory to standard medical therapy. Due to the unremitting thyrotoxicosis, a total thyroidectomy was performed without complications resu...

Management of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis.

Amiodarone is used increasingly in a number of cardiac conditions. Amiodarone is heavily iodinated and can cause thyroid dysfunction. The diagnosis of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis remains difficult and more common causes of thyrotoxicosis need to be considered and excluded. Amiodarone has a significant side effect profile, which includes thyroid dysfunction. Amiodarone is an effective drug...
